New federal proposals could gut protections for species and communities
ecojustice celebrates 35 years

Dear supporter,

The federal government has just unveiled proposed changes to environmental laws and policy that could become the biggest rollback of environmental protections in a generation. These proposals would allow cabinet to create “economic zones” where major industrial projects, including fossil fuels, could be pre-approved to bypass federal impact assessment and push species toward extinction.

This goes beyond streamlining approvals. It echoes — and may, in some ways, surpass — the worst of the Harper-era attacks on environmental laws and public oversight.

You can read our immediate response as we continue to review the details. We will be sharing more analysis, actions, and ways to fight back in the days ahead.

What’s being proposed is not “streamlining.” It’s a direct dismantling of environmental safeguards, endangered species protections, and science-based oversight — all in the name of speeding up industrial development to benefit corporate profits.

Ecojustice is already preparing the response. We’ll have much more to share soon.
